DEPARTMENT’S HISTORY, PHILOSOPHY, VISION AND MISSION

History
The B.Sc. Environmental Science and Resource Management undergraduate degree formed one of the programmes that were to be offered at the commencement of academic activities in the University in 2003. The B.Sc. structure (Outline Programme Proposal and Detailed Programme Proposal), of the programmes was approved by the senate of the University. The B.Sc. (Hons) Environmental Science and Resource Management programme finally commenced in the 2011/2012 session along with other Departments of the Faculty. The B.Sc. programme provides constituent courses to other programmes in other Faculties of the University. The programme is intended for students who are primarily interested in a career in academics and professional environmental management or wish to have a thorough knowledge of environmental science and resource management acquire a basic understanding of environmental problems and proffer solutions in preparation for professional challenges or advancement to graduate school in environmental resource management or other related discipline in environmental sciences/studies. In the year 2015, the programme secured its full accreditation. The programme has been in existence for about twelve (12), years now across the NOUN Study Center nationwide. In the last convocation in the year 2023, the Department graduated on the 13th of April 2024 with a total of Five Hundred and Sixty-Nine (569) graduates for the programme. Currently, the registered active student population for this course is across the 115 Study Centres Seven Hundred and Eleven (711), and still counting as of the 2024_1 academic session. Facilitators for this course are over 100 in number with qualifications not less than a Master’s and PhD Degree. The Department is set to commence the Postgraduate Degree programs in Environmental Resource Management across the Postgraduate Diploma, Master’s and PhD Degrees in earnest.

Description of the Programme
The B.Sc. degree in Environmental Science and Resource Management is a four (4) years duration program. The program covers the basic principles and components of environmental, biological, chemical and physical sciences. This is with the inclusion of social sciences and Law components to gain an understanding of human interactions and laws governing the environment for sustainability and environmental quality. This degree program will equip the environmental managers of the present and future generations with the scientific background and the ability to apply it to real-life environmental problems with soluble measures. The programme applies scientific principles and management objectives to a range of ecological problems such as environmental pollution, ecosystem conservation and restoration, climate change and mechanisms for their mitigation, including legislation.

Philosophy
The philosophy of the B.Sc. Environmental Science and Resource Management programme, anchored on the Open and Distance Learning (ODL), principles of accessibility and flexibility. The program is to produce graduates who are environmentally literate, conscious, sensitive and skilful. The program also seeks to produce graduates who can make an objective contribution to national development by providing a solution(s) to natural and man-made environmental problems arising from environmental abuse and making the surface of the earth to be functionally habitable, sustainable and a projection of future challenges. The program is mounted through virtual classroom instruction, learner-support laboratory practicals, ancillary field demonstrations and e-learning resources in addition to hard copy materials.

Vision 

The B.Sc. program will produce skilled manpower, and trained students specifically for environmental surveillance, monitoring and management of environmental resources on the earth’s surface. The academic programme is also designed to provide the training needed for an understanding of the environment and to build upon this foundation by exploring in some depth, specific aspects such as resource depletion, recycling, re-use and the impact of science and technology on the environment.

Mission

 The Open and Distance Learning programme of the National Open University of Nigeria has become a veritable tool of national development. The mission statement of the programme is to:a. Provide a comprehensive and relevant distance learning curriculum in science-based programmesb. Produce well-informed graduates for careers in academia, industry and governmentc. Conduct high-quality research in science-related disciplines, andd. Encourage and support strong cross-disciplinary, interdisciplinary, and multi-disciplinary collaborations both within and beyond the University (nationally and internationally)

 

Aim

The B.Sc. Environmental Science and Resource Management Programme is to give students a broad knowledge and understanding of contemporary environmental challenges, theories, concepts, skills and strategies for managing them. 

Objectives

The programme has four broad objectives all within the context of its philosophy. These are to:

a. Teach the understanding of both the biophysical and human environments and the relationship between the two.

b. Imparts the skills, methodologies and analytical techniques required to conduct in-depth research in human and biophysical environments and their interactions

c. Impart the ideas and concepts of rational management for the planning, conservation, restoration and sustainable use of the environment.

d. Acquire a basic understanding of environmental problems and how to proffer solutions to them.

Admission Requirements 

100 Level

(i) Application in the B.Sc. Environmental Science and Resource Management 100 Level programme should meet a minimum of five (5), Ordinary Level (O’ Level) credits including English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Geography and any One of Biology, Physics, Agricultural Science, Health Science/Education and Economics, Mining, Photography, mining, and Tourism at the West African School Certificate (WASC), of the west African examination council (WAEC), National Examination Council (NECO), Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE), General Certificate of Education (GCE), and NABTEB. However, additional certificates and diplomas will be considered on merits. Direct Entry (DE): (200 Level)

(ii). In addition, to the 100 Level admission requirements as stated above for the freshers, the Direct Entries prospective candidates for 200 Level with Diploma/OND results in Cartography, Civic Engineering, Geography, Health Sciences, Land Surveying and Mining or National Certificate Education (NCE), with any other subject combination in Education, Geography. HND with Pass result in Cartography, Civic Engineering, Geography, Health Sciences, Land Surveying, Mining, Chemistry or Biochemistry. Furthermore, a B.Sc. degree with Third-Class results in Education, Geography or HND Pass in Cartography, Civic Engineering, Geography, Health Sciences, Land Surveying, Mining, Chemistry or Biochemistry respectively from an approved Polytechnic and University with its undergraduate degree programme fully accredited.

Direct Entry (DE): (300 Level)

(iii). In addition, to the 100 Level admission requirements as stated above for the freshers, the Direct Entries prospective candidates for 300 Level with HND Lower-Credit in Cartography, Civic Engineering, Conservative Ecology, Eco-Tourism and Wild Life Management, Estate Management, Geography, Geographical Information Management, Health Sciences, Survey/Cartography/Land Surveying Management, Mining, Chemistry or Biochemistry from an approved Polytechnics with its undergraduate degree programme fully accredited. Furthermore, a B.Sc. degree with Second Class Lower (22), results in Biology, Chemistry or Biochemistry, Estate Management, Geographical Information Management, Geography, Geoinformatics, Geophysics, Land Management, Land Survey Management, Surveying/Cartography. Land Survey Management, Urban and Regional Planning, from an approved University with its undergraduate degree programme fully accredited.

Criteria for Graduation

To graduate from the B.Sc. degree program, the student shall have undergone at least 8 to 10 semesters for the entry point for the 100 Level. A minimum of 6 to 8 semesters for 200 Level and 4 to 6 semesters for 300 Level Direct programs.  This is the inclusion of SIWES, field trips and practical training components. Course workload must meet the graduation requirements of the University based on minimum academic standards. However, in doing so, the student must earn a minimum of 123 Credit Units for the four-year programme For the B.Sc. degree in Environmental Science and Resource Management. Direct entry (200-Level) students must earn a minimum of 90 Credit Units. The submission of the completed practical manual, field trip report, SIWES logbook and an undergraduate project thesis based on supervised research is a graduation requirement which must not be compromised. These are with a pass in the Faculty and University Core Courses.

Practical and Field Trip

The Department of Environmental Science carried out two (2) practical courses for the B.Sc. Environmental Science and Resource Management undergraduate program. These practical sessions are done within the residency period of one (1), month across the fifteen (15), approved study centres across the six (6), geo-political zones nationwide. These practical and theoretical courses are ESM222: Water Resource and ESM234: Soil Evaluation. The laboratory manual is a 2-in-1 Water and Soil Resources Evaluation booklet. The Department decided to have her practical courses in the 200 level and field trip in 300 Level as against the 100 level. Since environmental science is an integration of Geography, Chemistry, Biology, Health Science, Agricultural Science and Physics courses, our students are subjected to take the Faculty Compulsory Courses at the 100 level.Our practical sessions are based on laboratory experimentation and fieldwork procedures in line with the structured manual and NOUN/FOS/WINDOWS. The practical manuals guide and assess the students to gain hands-on experience and understand the subject matter. The students at the end of the exercise, per course, would be graded with a 70% score while the examination is 30%.  Practical manuals and lab coats are made available to students with the commencement of the exercises per semesters with evidence of registration. During the residency periods for the practical sessions, the students are re-notified, get permission from the employers, make provisions for logistics and accommodation, and converge at the nearness designated centres in line with the ODL environment.

ESM 341: INTRODUCTION TO INSTRUMENTATION, MEASUREMENTS AND FIELD METHODS IN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE (2 UNITS)

Description of instruments for measuring air quality i.e. NO, O2, CO, Relative air humidity e.t.c Noise level etc. Water, soil measuring instruments,  corrosivity,  resistance,  PH,  Conductivity,  BOD  e.t.c. Instrumentation and parameters for measuring   wastewater prior to discharge; potable water for safe drinking.   Ecological Sampling techniques, measurement of properties and quality of water, soil and air.

ESM 343: CLIMATE CHANGE AND THE ENVIRONMENT (2 UNITS)

Description of the physical and chemical properties and processes that shape earth’s surface, land, atmosphere, ocean and climate. Physical control on biological productivity will be evaluated. Specific topics will    include    global    warming,    air,    pollution   and    transport. Stratospheric ozone, ocean upwelling of nutrients and productivity.

ESM 326:OCEANOGRAPHY (2 UNITS)

Study of the temperature and chemistry of sea water.  Biological activities and their distribution.  Salinity, chlorinity, currents, tides, waves, sound and radiation in the sea, conductivity, diffusion, viscosity and dynamics of sea water distribution and behaviour of plankton.  Brackish water condition and fauna.  Interrelationship and physiological adaptations of marine organisms.

 

ESM 328:      BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION (2 UNITS)

Loss   of   biological   diversity and   environmental pollution. Basic ecological and evolutionary principles underpinning efforts to conserve the earth’s biodiversity.  These principles will be examined in the context of efforts to halt the rapid increase in disappearance of both plants and animals.  Some sociological and economic issues will be treated with emphasis on biological aspects of the crucial problems and case studies.

Global view of general trends in population growth and development with emphasis on Nigeria.   The  course will explore the dynamic relationships  between  environmental  and  social  forces  from  the Pleistocene  to  the  present.   Topics  will  include  the  transition  of societies from hunting and gathering to agriculture, responses of early urban civilisations to environmental constraints, deforestation land degradation and desertification in ancient and modern societies.  The destruction and reconstruction of new world by the old. Consideration of means to distinguish natural from anthropogenic environmental changes.

 

ESM 423:      Hydrology and Water Resources (3 Units)

Definition   and   scope   of   hydrology;   trends   in   hydrology;  the hydrological cycle and the approaches to its study; the drainage basin as a hydrologic unit; precipitation, interception, infiltration and soil moisture evaporation and evapo-transpiration; runoff and floods; the hydraulic  and  mechanic  of  flood;  runoff  generation,  contributing areas.
