Message from the HOD

You are welcome to the Department of Environmental Science, Faculty of Sciences, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). The University adopted the Faculty system in 2016, which gave birth to the Department of Environmental Science on the 12th of July 2016.

The Department currently has one (1) undergraduate programme in B.Sc. Environmental Science and Resource Management. The programme commenced in the 2012/2013 academic session. The components of Environmental Science incorporate the study of the environmental, physical, chemical and biological processes that take place on the earth, as well as the social, political, cultural and laws processes which impact the planet’s sustainability and environmental quality.

Studying environmental science provides you with a broad understanding of the current environmental issues and challenges on a local, national and global scale. Areas, covered include environmental: Biology, Geography, Geology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Soil Science and Resource Management.

As an environmental science student, you will strive to understand the complex relationship between mankind and the environment, drawing on a diverse range of disciplines as listed above. In addition, the programme will equip you with the skills and knowledge for a range of jobs in areas such as conservation sustainability, environmental research and education.

Thus, this Programme seeks to promote science by developing graduates who would acquire the basic knowledge and skills through hands-on experience, field trips and supporting use of technologies such as virtual and dry laboratories, as well as other ODL infrastructure to ensure no barriers to learning and access in line with the Open and Distance Learning (ODL), mode of operations. You are therefore encouraged to have a copy of the faculty handbook, practical and field trip manual and periodically browse through the course materials during and after the programme to be appropriately and adequately guided in decision-making and proffering solutions to environmental problems as a stakeholder.
